Murat İsmail Rauf Daltaban (born May 5, 1966, Ankara) is a renowned Turkish actor and theatre director. He is one of the founders of DOT Theatre, located in Istanbul, and serves as the General Art Director of Nilüfer Kent Theatre in Bursa. Daltaban is widely known for his roles in the film Salkım Hanımın Taneleri, the series Kınalı Kar, and his portrayal of Ali Rıza (Arıza) in the TV series Hırsız Polis. He has also made significant contributions to Turkish theater through his directing and acting roles.
Murat Daltaban was born on May 5, 1966, in Ankara. He studied part-time at the Opera Department of the Ankara Conservatory between 1983 and 1986. He then attended the Mining Engineering Department of METU between 1987 and 1992 but left his engineering studies unfinished. Daltaban shifted his focus to acting and enrolled in the Theater Department of the Faculty of Language, History, and Geography at Ankara University, graduating in 1992. He also pursued music, performing rock and punk music with his band in clubs during this period.
Career
Daltaban’s career in theater began in 1989 when he took his first role in the play Bir Sırça Köşk Masalı at the Ankara State Theater. He worked for the Istanbul City Theaters from 1993 for fourteen years, playing leading roles in plays such as Prince Andre, War and Peace, Iago - Othello, and Jason - Medea.
In addition to his stage career, Daltaban ventured into film and television, with his first film role in Babam Askerde (1994). He gained widespread recognition with his role as the Armenian clarinetist Artin in Salkım Hanımın Taneleri (1999), winning the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 5th Sadri Alışık Theater and Cinema Actor Awards. He later became known for his roles in the TV series Kınalı Kar and Hırsız Polis.
In 2005, Daltaban co-founded DOT Theatre in Istanbul with his wife, Özlem Daltaban, and Süha Bilal. He served as the artistic director of the theater, staging plays that focused on the stories of urban people. DOT Theatre gained recognition for its productions of in-yer-face plays. Daltaban directed around twenty plays at DOT between 2005 and 2018, earning awards and accolades for his work, including the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) Theatre of the Year Award. His production of Gergeanlar was staged at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival in 2017 and won multiple awards, including the Best Director Award.
In 2021, Daltaban was appointed as the General Artistic Director of Nilüfer Kent Theatre in Bursa.
