Biography
Macit Koper (born 1 March 1944) is a Turkish actor, director, and scriptwriter known for his impactful performances on stage and screen, as well as his contributions to Turkish cinema through screenwriting. He gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Zebercet in the film Anayurt Oteli. With a career spanning decades, Koper has worked at prominent institutions like Dostlar Theatre and Istanbul City Theatres. He has also collaborated with well-known directors and has received numerous national and international awards for his work in theatre and film. He is married to artist and scriptwriter Hülya Koper, and their son, Gün Koper, is also an actor.
Early Life
Macit Koper was born on 1 March 1944 in Istanbul, Turkey. He developed an interest in theatre during his high school years, especially after joining the Beşiktaş Community Center. He received his foundational training at the LCC Theatre School, studying under renowned names such as Muhsin Ertuğrul, Beklan Algan, and Ayla Algan. This early exposure laid the groundwork for his future in the performing arts.
Career
Koper began his professional theatre career at Dostlar Theatre in 1969, where he worked as an actor, director, and dramatist until the theatre was closed due to financial difficulties in 1979. That same year, he joined Istanbul City Theatres for the 1979/1980 season. He briefly went to Berlin to prepare a play about foreign workers and wrote and directed Giden, Tez Geri Dönmez. His theatre career was interrupted by the 1980 Turkish coup d'état, after which he continued to work in Dostlar Theatre, notably adapting Yaşar Kemal's Ağrı Dağı Efsanesi into a play for the 1981–1982 season.
Koper transitioned into screenwriting in 1983 with the film Seni Seviyorum, encouraged by director Atıf Yılmaz. He later wrote Rumuz Goncagül (1987) and collaborated primarily with directors İrfan Tözüm and Ömer Kavur. As an actor, he appeared in notable films such as Aaahh Belinda, Melodram, and earned high praise for his role in Anayurt Oteli.
In 1989, a court decision reinstated him at Istanbul City Theatres. Koper remained active in both stage and screen, winning numerous awards for acting, screenwriting, and directing. In recent years, he appeared in popular television series such as Muhteşem Yüzyıl (2013) as Lala Mustafa Pasha and Poyraz Karayel (2016).
