Biography
Ertan Saban (born 4 December 1977) is an actor and screenwriter with dual Turkish and Macedonian citizenships. Born in Skopje, SR Macedonia, SFR Yugoslavia, he is of Turkish descent and belongs to the Turkish minority in the Balkans. Known for his multilingual abilities, Saban can speak Bulgarian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Serbian, Albanian, Greek, English, French, and two dialects of Turkish— the Istanbul dialect and the Üsküp (Skopje) dialect, which is at risk of being lost. He has achieved recognition for his performances in theater, television series, and films, both in Turkey and internationally.
Ertan Saban was born in Skopje, SR Macedonia, SFR Yugoslavia, into a Turkish family that is part of the Turkish minority in the Balkans. He attended high school in the veterinary department but later shifted his focus to pedagogy. Eventually, he graduated from the Theater Department of the State Conservatory of Macedonia. Saban is multilingual, fluent in Bulgarian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Serbian, Albanian, Greek, English, French, and two Turkish dialects, reflecting his diverse background and education.
Career
Saban began his acting career by performing on stage in various plays at the Macedonian Turkish Theater alongside his brother, Erman Saban, and fellow actors Filiz Ahmet and Luran Ahmeti. He later worked in theater in France before moving to Turkey, where he began acting and directing in theater, television series, and films. His breakthrough role came with the historical series "Elveda Rumeli," where he played the character Alex, set against the backdrop of the Ottoman Empire's collapse in Macedonia.
As a co-writer and actor, Saban gained further recognition with the film "Limonata," directed by Ali Atay. He also starred in the comedy series "Mutlu Ol Yeter," "Şeref Bey," and the crime series "Kılıç Günü." Saban's other television credits include "Savcının Karısı," "Sağır Oda," "Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu," "Sakarya Fırat," and guest roles in "Sultan Makamı," "Avlu," and "Büyük Sürgün: Kafkasya."
Saban portrayed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the films "Bir Cumhuriyet Şarkısı" and "Balkan Is Not Dead," and in a commercial for İş Bankası. He also played Constantine XI in "Mehmed: Bir Cihan Fatihi" and Robert Frew in "Akif." More recently, he starred in the TV series "Gelsin Hayat Bildiği Gibi" alongside Devrim Özkan and Özge Özberk, and "Kötü Kan" with Damla Sönmez.
Ertan Saban married actress Ebru Özkan on June 3, 2016. The couple has a daughter named Biricik.
