Biography
Ahmet Rıfat Şungar (born July 9, 1983, in Istanbul) is a Turkish film and television actor known for his performances in critically acclaimed films by renowned directors, including Nuri Bilge Ceylan. He gained international recognition with his role in Three Monkeys (2008), which won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Over the years, he has appeared in various national and international productions, earning multiple acting awards and having his films featured at top film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Slamdance.
Early Life
Ahmet Rıfat Şungar was born on July 9, 1983, in the Kartal district of Istanbul, Turkey. He completed his high school education at Kartal Süleyman Demirel Anatolian High School. Following his passion for the performing arts, he enrolled in the Istanbul University State Conservatory Theater Department, one of Turkey’s most prestigious acting schools, where he received his formal training in theater.
Career
Şungar began his acting career in 2008 with the film Three Monkeys (Üç Maymun), directed by Palme d'Or winner Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The film won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival and brought him both national and international acclaim. His performance earned him accolades such as "The Most Promising Actor" and "The Best Supporting Actor."
Following this breakthrough, he continued to work with top Turkish directors and expanded into international cinema. In 2015, he starred in the French-language film Le Chant des Hommes, further showcasing his versatility. His films have been screened at major festivals around the world, including Cannes, Berlin, and Slamdance.
In 2018, Şungar reunited with Nuri Bilge Ceylan for The Wild Pear Tree (Ahlat Ağacı), which was selected as the closing film in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Alongside his film work, he has appeared in numerous Turkish television series and remains active in both national and international projects.
